Having served in many different capacities in a number of organizations and role, John’s experience and capabilities are best summarized in the four major roles he has consistently played:

Leader · Manager · Educator · Technologist

Leader

Being a leader is being a person who guides the process of defining a place a group of people (organization)  want to go and guiding the group to that place. Leadership is best expressed when it comes in the form of service, and where power relies on the authority form influence rather than position or expertise. Leadership can come from many different roles, whether by position, assignment or by influence, and is often shared as the group makes the journey to the desired place. A good leader also seeks to find a win for everyone in the group, even if that win is found by joining a different group.

Manager

Peter Drucker defines management as getting work done through the efforts of others. A manager is one who coordinates the work of others to reach the objectives of the organization. Successful management begins with gaining agreement on the objectives that need to be met. These include the objectives that represent operational performance as well as objectives to implement strategic change.  Then, the manager empowers and equips the people to meet these objectives, providing feedback on performance to reinforce what should be done and correct what needs to be changed.

Educator

The word educate comes from the Latin root “duc” which means to lead. An educator is one who leads students to understanding new concepts and mastering new skills. A good educator teaches for mastery, guiding students to become proficient in a concept or practice rather than merely getting the answer correct on an assignment. A good educator recognizes that students have a based of knowledge and ability and seek to add to that base.

Technologist

Technology is any human created tool that improves the ability of accomplishing an end. Technology is only as valuable as the benefit it provides to the people who use it. A technologist understands a broad scope of a technology area, but more importantly understands how that combines with the people who use it to maximize the value. The key to successful technology adoption is to ensure that the technology serves the people, and not the other way around.
